The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) is committed to delivering an environmentally responsible festival. We actively work to minimize our carbon footprint and implement innovative waste reduction strategies across our 10-day program.
Waste Mitigation & Circular Economy
We take a proactive approach to waste management by ensuring all suppliers and vendors align with our sustainability goals:
-
Supplier Compliance: All food and beverage vendors are required to provide 100% recyclable containers. Food trucks submit sample containers to festival management for approval prior to the event.
- Single-Use Plastics: In alignment with the Victorian Government’s ban, we have eliminated single-use plastics across our venues.
Water Refill Stations: We encourage an eco-friendly audience by providing access to water fountains at all venues. We invite our dance competitors, families, and attendees to bring their own reusable water bottles.
- Standardized Bin Systems: Each venue is carefully selected to provide clearly marked, separate streams for general waste and mixed recycling, ensuring attendees can easily minimize their environmental impact.
Sustainable Transport & The "LOVE MY TRAVEL" Initiative
To reduce the indirect carbon emissions of the festival, we prioritize public transport as the primary means of travel for our audience.
- Strategic Promotion: Public transport information is integrated into the IFFM website and promoted through mainstream media. Our branding is displayed across Melbourne’s tram and rail networks to encourage low-impact travel.
-
The "LOVE MY TRAVEL" Contest: We are continuing our "LOVE MY TRAVEL" campaign. Patrons who travel via tram, bus, or train can enter our lucky draw for exclusive prizes by simply showing their valid transport tickets.
Operational Sustainability
We implement long-term strategies to reduce physical waste and energy consumption:
- Year-Round Digital Engagement: By providing a year-round online viewing option, IFFM enables global engagement with a significantly reduced environmental impact compared to physical travel.
-
Digital Ticketing & Communication: To eliminate paper waste, we have transitioned to a fully digital ticketing system. All festival passes and event tickets are issued digitally, and we prioritize digital programs across all metropolitan and regional events.
-
Material Reuse: To minimize production waste, IFFM strategically reuses high-quality promotional and branding materials from previous festival editions.
