Unfolding in the scenic South of India, Ottaal is a contemporary retelling of Anton Chekov’s short story, Vanka. Winner of the Crystal Bear at the Berlin Film Festival, the moving film follows Kuttappayi, a young boy who lives with his grandfather in the idyll of Kuttanad. The two play out a life idyll: fishing, playing, herding ducks: until the grandfather is stricken ill. A timeless story suitable for all audiences, Otaal explores the effects of poverty in contemporary society.

Jayaraj Rajasekharan Nair, often credited as Jayaraj, is a prolific Indian Malayali filmmaker. He is known for Vidyarambham (1990), (1993), Highway (1995), Desadanam (1996), Kaliyattam (1997), 4 the People (2004), and Ottaal (2015).
